Methyldopa is a centrally active sympatholytic agent indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It is used as active ingredients, which is a derivative of L-tyrosine having a methyl group and an additional hydroxy group on the phenyl ring. It plays the role of a hapten, an antihypertensive agent, an alpha-adrenergic agonist, a peripheral nervous system drug and a sympatholytic agent.

Working: This medicine works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. The exact mechanism of action is not known. It is thought to lower blood pressure by activating receptors in the central nervous system. This active ingredient reduces the concentration of epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin.  Neurotransmitters like Epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin uses to communicate. Reducing the concentration of these neurotransmitters causes blood vessels to relax or widen which leads to blood pressure is reduced.
