This medicine is composed of the active component Metformin. This active agent belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanide antidiabetics that has antihyperglycemic activity. This drug is associated with a very low incidence of lactic acidosis. It helps decrease LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also prevents cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This drug is not metabolized and is excreted by the kidneys. It is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes that can be used in combination with sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or other hypoglycemic agents.
Indications
This medicine is approved to be used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar. Glucophage is used in people with type 2 diabetes. It is to be used for controlling high blood sugar which helps to prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. It properly controls diabetes which may lessen the risk of a heart attack or stroke. It restores the body’s proper response to the insulin that is naturally produced in the body. It decreases the amount of sugar that the liver produces and that the stomach/intestines absorb.
Action Mechanism
Metformin-composed medicine works by reducing the amount of sugar the liver releases into the blood. Glucophage also makes the body respond better to insulin. Hormone insulin controls the level of sugar in the blood. It is best to take this drug with a meal to reduce the side effects.
Dosages
This effective medication is made available in dosages as mentioned below:
- 500 mg: This medication should be taken 1 to 3 times a day with meals as directed by the doctor.
- 850 mg: It is to be consumed with meals, 1 to 3 times a day exactly as mentioned in the prescription by the doctor.
- 1000 mg: This drug is to be administered 1 to 3 times a day as advised by the doctor.
Note
This drug should not be given to a child below 10 years old. It should not be used in people with type 1 diabetes.
