The main active component of this medicine is Metformin which belongs to a class of drugs called biguanide antidiabetic. It shows an antihyperglycemic activity. This active component is associated with a very low incidence of lactic acidosis. This drug helps reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It acts by preventing the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. It is not metabolized and is excreted ununiformed by the kidneys. This drug is a first-line agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes that can be indicated alone or in combination with sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or other hypoglycemic agents.
Indications
Given drug is available for oral consumption in the form of a conventional tablet. It is used to treat high blood sugar levels induced by type 2 diabetes. Glucophage XR can be used in combination with diet and exercise.
Action Mechanism
This medication has Metformin as the main active ingredient, which belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanides. Glucophage XR works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver, decreasing the amount of glucose the body absorbs, and increasing the effect of insulin on the body. Insulin is a necessary hormone that helps the body to remove extra sugar from the blood. It decreases blood sugar levels.

Dosages
This effective medicine is available in dosages as mentioned below:
- 500 mg: This tablet must be administered 1 to 3 times a day with meals as directed by the doctor. Drink plenty of fluids while treating with this medicine
- 1000 mg: It is to be consumed 1 to 3 times a day with food as mentioned in the prescription by the doctor
Note
This medicine should not be used in case of having a medical history of severe kidney disease, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.
