Active Ingredient
This conventional tablet is composed with Risedronate Sodium as active ingredient. This ingredient belongs to a group of bisphosphonates. The component is a sodium salt of risedronic acid, a synthetic pyridinyl bisphosphonate.
Indications
The medicine is used to treat Paget’s disease of bone i.e. osteitis deformans and in the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women. This pill also treats osteoporosis in men. The given medicine also helps to prevent and to treat osteoporosis caused by steroid medications, which is glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Action Mechanism
The given medicine Actonel works by slowing the bone loss and maintains strong bones. It also reduces the risk of broken bones I.e. fractures. In the medicine, Risedronic acid binds to hydroxyapatite crystals in bone and inhibits osteoclast-dependent bone resorption. The active component of this pill acts to strengthen bone. It inhibits bone removal by osteoclasts. It also slows down the rate at which bone is dissolved and increases the amount of bone. The component is more potent in blocking the dissolution of bone than etidronate and alendronate.
Dosages
The given medicine Actonel is composed with bisphosphonate that treats osteoporosis in adults. The same is available as:
- 5 mg : This dosage is to be consumed as prescribed by the doctor
- 35 mg : Take this medicine early in the morning on an empty stomach, exactly directed by the doctor
- 150 mg : Do not exceed doctor’s prescription, for attaining safe and effective results.

Note
This medicine should not be taken at bedtime. Take this tablet with water. Do not take this medicine with other beverages. Avoid lying down at least for 30 minutes after consuming this medicine.
