Zonisamide is used as an active component with an anticonvulsant property. The exact mechanism of action is not completely known. This active component blocks sodium and calcium channels to stabilize neuronal membranes and suppress neuronal hyper-synchronization. It shows an affinity for gamma-aminobutyric acid but does not potentiate the synaptic activity of GABA. This active agent also facilitates both dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission. It is an anticonvulsant used in combination with other antiepileptic medicines for partial-onset seizures.
Class of Drugs – Anticonvulsants
Molecular Formula – C8H8N2O3S
Molecular Weight – 212.23 g/mol
Working: Given medication is active against the tonic phase. It acts against the clonic phase and may stabilize neuronal membranes. Zonisamide acts at sodium and calcium channels and does not affect GABA activity. It has some weak carbonic anhydrase inhibitor activity.
Uses: This medication is indicated with other drugs for the prevention and control of seizures caused due to epilepsy. Zonisamide component is a sulfonamide anticonvulsant and a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that prevents seizures effectively. This medication is used as an active component in medication for the treatment of epilepsy, migraine headaches, seizures complex or partial, nerve pain, and seizures of the type grand mal or tonic-clonic.
