Zidovudine-Lamivudine is a combination of two ingredients Zidovudine and Lamivudine. Zidovudine inhibits DNA polymerase, leads to the inhibition of DNA replication and cell death. This active component decreases levels of available pyrimidines. It is a nucleoside analog and reverses transcriptase inhibitor used in the therapy and prophylaxis of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Lamivudine is used against the hepatitis B virus and HIV. It is phosphorylated to its active metabolites. In HBV, with L-MP into viral DNA by HBV polymerase leads to DNA chain termination. L-TP is a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerases alpha and beta, and mitochondrial DNA polymerase.
