Tacrolimus is a macrolide isolated from Streptomyces tsukubaensis. This is used as the main active component that binds to the FKBP-12 protein and forms a complex with calcium-dependent proteins, so as to inhibit the calcineurin phosphatase activity. It also resulting in reduced cytokine production. It exhibits potent immunosuppressive activity in vivo and prevents the activation of T-lymphocytes in response to antigenic or mitogenic stimulation. This component possesses similar immunosuppressive properties to cyclosporine, but is more potent.
