Sirolimus is an active component that has immunosuppressant properties. This component acts by binding to the immunophilin FK Binding Protein-12 to generate an immunosuppressive complex. This binds to and inhibits the activation of the mammalian Target of Rapamycin, a key regulatory kinase. This process leads to the inhibition of T lymphocyte activation and proliferation that occurs in response to antigenic and cytokine stimulation and inhibition of antibody production.
