Probenecid is a medicinal drug, which is a benzoic acid derivative with the anti-hyperuricemic property. This is used as the main active component in the medication for the prevention of gout and gouty arthritis. It inhibits the active reabsorption of urate at the proximal tubule in the kidney to increasing urinary excretion of uric acid and lowering serum urate concentrations. This medication also prevents urate deposition and promotes the resolution of existing urate deposits. This active component modulates the transport of organic acids and acidic drugs at the proximal and distal renal tubule, so as to increase the drug serum concentration.
