Rizatriptan Benzoate is used as the main active component in the medication to treat migraine headache. This component is a member of the triptan class agents that shows anti-migraine property. It binds to and activates serotonin 1B receptors expressed in intracranial arteries, and to 5-HT 1D receptors present on peripheral trigeminal sensory nerve terminals in the meninges and central terminals in brain stem sensory nuclei. Receptor binding leads to constriction of cranial vessels and inhibition of nociceptive transmission so as to providing relief of migraine headaches. It may also relief migraine headaches due to inhibition of pro-inflammatory neuropeptide release. It is available in an orally disintegrating tablet form.
