Mesalamine is an Aminosalicylate drug used as the main active ingredient in medicines. It is Aminosalicylic Acid and a monohydroxybenzoic acid that is salicylic acid substituted by an amino group. It plays the role of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This component is an aromatic amine, an amino acid, a member of phenols, a monocarboxylic acid and a monohydroxybenzoic acid. It derives from salicylic acid.

Working: The mechanism of action of this medication is not known. But it is believed by the scientists that it may work by reducing inflammation in the colon. The medication blocks the activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase so as to reduce the production of prostaglandins. Due to reduction prostaglandins, it decreases the inflammation in the colon and the symptoms of ulcerative colitis
Uses: It is indicated for the treatment of certain bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. It reduces symptoms of ulcerative colitis like diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain.
