Montelukast Sodium is a selective cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist that shows anti-inflammatory and bronchodilating activities. It actively blocks the cysteinyl leukotriene 1 receptor, which binds the inflammatory mediator leukotriene D4. Due to the inhibition of LTD4 activity leads to inhibition of leukotriene-mediated inflammatory events. The CysLT1 receptor is found spleen, lung, placenta, small intestine, and nasal mucosa, include monocyte/macrophages, mast cells, eosinophils, CD34-positive hemopoietic progenitor cells, neutrophils and endothelial cells.
