Methimazole medication is a thioamide inhibitor of the enzyme thyroid peroxidase (TPO). It shows the antithyroid activity. It works by inhibiting the metabolism of iodide and the iodination of tyrosine residues in the thyroid hormone precursor thyroglobulin by TPO. This process prevents the synthesis of the thyroid hormones’ triiodothyronine and thyroxine. It is used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease.

Class of Drugs – A thioamide inhibitor

Molecular Formula – C4H6N2S

Molecular Weight – 114.17 g/mol

Working: This mentioned active component Methimazole protects iodine and peroxidase from their normal interactions with thyroglobulin to release T4 and T3. This process reduces thyroid hormone formation. It also interferes with the conversion of T4 to T3. Since T3 is more potent than T4, it decreases the activity of thyroid hormones.

Uses: This particular medication is intended to prevent the thyroid gland from forming excessive thyroid hormone. Methimazole is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism i.e. overactive thyroid. It can also be used before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment.
