Active Ingredient: The main active component of this medicine is Efavirenz, which is a synthetic non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor with antiviral activity. It helps binds directly to the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RT, an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase, blocking its function in viral DNA replication. It has been shown to significantly reduce HIV viral load, retarding or preventing damage to the immune system and reducing the risk of developing AIDS. It induces activity of the cytochrome P450 system, accelerating its own metabolism.
Indications: This drug is used with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications. It also improves your quality of life. The medication Sustiva belongs to a class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is not a cure for HIV infection. It is used to decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others,
Action Mechanism: This given drug binds noncompetitively to an active site of the reverse transcriptase molecule. Reverse transcriptase directs the polymerization of DNA from viral RNA. The Sustiva inhibits this polymerization by altering the position of critical amino acids within the catalytic site.
Dosages: This medication is available for oral consumption and in dosage as mentioned below:
- 200 mg: This medicine should be consumed on an empty stomach, without food, usually once a day at bedtime or as directed by the doctor
- 600 mg: It is to be consumed before meal once a day as prescribed by the doctor
