Description
Active Ingredient:
The main active component of this medicine is Pilocarpine Hydrochloride. This active component is a natural alkaloid extracted from plants of the genus Pilocarpus that has cholinergic agonist activity. It binds to muscarinic receptors, so as to induce exocrine gland secretion and stimulate the smooth muscle in the bronchi, urinary tract, biliary tract, and intestinal tract. This active ingredient stimulates the sphincter pupillae to contract, leads to miosis; stimulates the ciliary muscle to contract. It results in a spasm of accommodation and may cause a transitory rise in intraocular pressure, a more persistent fall due to opening of the trabecular meshwork, and an increase in the outflow of aqueous humor.
Indications:
This mentioned medication is indicated to treat symptoms of dry mouth due to certain immune diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome or from saliva gland damage occurred by radiation treatments of the head/neck for cancer. Salagen belongs to a group of drugs called cholinergic agonists. It stimulates a certain nerve to increase the amount of saliva produced, making it easier and more comfortable to speak and swallow.
Action Mechanism:
Pilocarpine composed medicine is used to decrease pressure inside the eye and treat dry mouth. Salagen is in the miotics family of drugs that works by activating cholinergic receptors of the muscarinic type which induce the trabecular meshwork to open and the aqueous humor to drain from the eye.
