Active Ingredient
This antibiotic has an active ingredient Ampicillin. This ingredient belongs to a class of drugs known as aminopenicillins. It kills bacteria by preventing them from making the protein needed to build their cell walls. This ingredient is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic, beta-lactam penicillin antibiotic with bactericidal activity.
Indications
Antibiotic medicine treats and prevents many different types of infections like bladder infections, pneumonia, meningitis, gonorrhea, and infections of the stomach, intestines, heart, or blood. This medicine Omnipen should not be used for viral infections like the common cold or flu. It is also used to treat urinary tract caused by E.coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococci, and Klebsiella pneumonia. It can be used in the treatment of endocarditis which is an inflammation of the heart caused by Streptococcus species.
Action Mechanism
The medicine can alter the normal bacteria in the colon and encourage the overgrowth of some bacteria such as Clostridium difficile which causes inflammation of the colon i..e pseudomembranous colitis.
Dosages
The medicine is a penicillin-type antibiotic that treats bacterial infections. The given medicine Omnipen is available in dosages as mentioned below:
- 250 mg: Take this medicine on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal with a full glass of water
- 500 mg: It is recommended to take 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal on an empty stomach.
