Manufacturer: Pharmacia & Upjohn
Active Ingredient: Tolterodine Tartrate is a benzhydryl compound and a muscarinic receptor antagonist possessing with antimuscarinic and antispasmodic properties. It acts by blocking muscarinic receptors so as to inhibit acetylcholine receptor binding. This antagonistic action leads to an increase in residual urine, reflecting an incomplete emptying of the bladder, and a decrease in detrusor pressure, indicating an antimuscarinic action on the lower urinary tract.
Indications: This given medication is approved to treat an overactive bladder. By relaxing the muscles in the bladder, Tolterodine Tartrate in the Detrol improves the ability to control frequent urination. It also reduces leaking of urine, feelings of needing to urinate right away, and frequent trips to the bathroom.
Action Mechanism: This antispasmodic medicine contributes to the increase in pressure within the bladder and the desire to urinate. There is conscious relaxation of the muscle at the outlet of the bladder, and the high bladder pressure forces urine out of the bladder. Usually, urination is under conscious control. In some people control as well as normal sensation are lost. The desire to urinate may be felt when there is little urine in the bladder, and urination may occur without control. By blocking the effect of acetylcholine on the muscle cells, Detrol slows the build-up of pressure in the bladder, decreases the sensation to urinate, and prevents uncontrolled urination.
