Active Ingredient: The main active component of this medicine is a Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium. This drug is a semisynthetic heparin-like glucosaminoglycan. This medicine may act as a buffer to control cell permeability by preventing irritating solutes from reaching cells coated with it. It adheres to the urinary bladder wall, protecting irritants from entering bladder cells and the development or progression of interstitial cystitis, a complication of some chemotherapies. This active factor also exhibits anticoagulant and fibrinolytic properties.
Indications: This mentioned medicine is indicated for the treatment of pain/discomfort from a certain bladder disorder. Elmiron may work by forming a layer on the bladder wall and protecting it from harmful/irritating substances in the urine. This drug is also a weak blood thinner so, it may increase the risk of bruising/bleeding.
Action Mechanism: This medication is thought to act by restoring a damaged, thin, or leaky bladder surface. This surface glycosaminoglycans, or GAG layer is composed of a coating of mucus, which protects the bladder wall from bacteria and irritating substances in the urine. Elmiron effectively repairs that wall and make it healthy as before.
