Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in this medicine is Lamotrigine. This active component is a synthetic phenyltriazine that has antiepileptic and analgesic properties. It acts by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter that leads to a reduction of pain-related transmission of signals along nerve fibers. It also inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels, suppresses glutamate release, and inhibits serotonin reuptake. It is used as antiseizure medicine.

Indications

Given medication is indicated alone or with other medications to help prevent or control seizures or epilepsy. It can also be used to help prevent the extreme mood swings of bipolar disorder in adults. Lamictal ODT should not be used in children younger than 2 years; it may increase the risk of side effects.
