AstraZeneca Toprol XL (extended release)

Description

Active Ingredient: This medicine has active component beta-blocker, Metoprolol Succinate. This medication is a cardioselective competitive beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist that has antihypertensive properties. It shows devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. It reduces the rate and force of myocardial contraction and a diminished cardiac output. This is an active component that may also reduce the secretion of renin decrease in levels of angiotensin II. This decreases sympathetic activation, like vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion.

Indications: This particular medication belongs to a class of drugs known as a beta-blocker. This medicine is indicated to treat chest pain, heart failure, and high blood pressure. Decreasing high blood pressure helps to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Toprol XL blocks the action of certain natural chemicals in the body like epinephrine that affects the heart and blood vessels. It decreases the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Action Mechanism: Blood pressure usually elevates due to blood vessels get tightened. This leads to a strain on the heart and maximizes the oxygen demand of the body. Toprol XL works by preventing norepinephrine or adrenalin from acting on beta receptors in blood vessels and in the heart. It results in the blood vessels to relax. So, this drug lowers the heart rate and decreases the heart’s demand for oxygen. As a consequence, it lowers blood pressure and reduces chest pain.

Dosages: This medicine is made available as an extended-release tablet in dosages as given below:

• 25 mg:  This extended-release tablet must be taken as advised by the doctor, usually once a day
• 50 mg:  It is advisable to take this medicine once a day as prescribed by the doctor

Note: This drug is not recommended in people with a serious heart problem, severe circulation problems, severe heart failure, or a history of slow heartbeats that lead to fainting.
