Description
Active Ingredient: The active component of this medication is Lanthanum Carbonate, which is the carbonate salt of lanthanum with the phosphate-binding property. This active ingredient dissociates in gastric acid to release lanthanum ion that binds dietary phosphate. It also inhibits the absorption of phosphate by producing highly insoluble lanthanum-phosphate complexes that decrease concentrations of serum phosphate and calcium phosphate.
Indications: Given medication is indicated to lower high blood phosphate levels in people who are on dialysis caused by severe kidney disease. Due to dialysis, some phosphate from the blood gets removed, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep phosphate levels balanced. Reducing blood phosphate levels can help keep bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in the body, and may reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels. Fosrenol is a natural mineral that binds to phosphate in the foods a person eats. The phosphate then passes out from the body in the stool.
Action Mechanism: This mentioned medication prevents the body from absorbing phosphate, allowing it to be removed from the phosphate-binding. Fosrenol is approved to lower phosphate levels in people with end stage kidney disease. High levels of phosphate can make it difficult for the body to absorb calcium, which can induce serious medical problems.
