This medication is composed of an active component Misoprostol. It is a prostaglandin analog used to reduce the risk of NSAID-related ulcers, manage miscarriages, prevent postpartum hemorrhage, and also for first-trimester abortions. The stimulation of prostaglandin receptors in the stomach reduces gastric acid secretion while stimulating these receptors in the uterus and cervix can increase the strength and frequency of contractions and decrease cervical tone.
Indications
This effective medication is used to prevent stomach ulcers while you take NSAIDs, especially if you are at risk for developing ulcers or have a history of ulcers. Misoprostol-composed drug Cytotec helps to decrease your risk of serious ulcer complications such as bleeding. This medication protects your stomach lining by lowering the amount of acid that comes in contact with it.

Action Mechanism
Synthetic prostaglandin E analog parent drug Cytotec is rapidly desterilized to misoprostol acid and replaces protective prostaglandins consumed with therapies that inhibit prostaglandin synthesis; inhibit gastric acid secretion and protect the gastric mucosa.
Dosages
This medication is available for oral consumption and in dosage as mentioned below:
- 0.1 mg: It is to be taken orally, usually four times a day, after meals and at bedtime to minimize diarrhea, or as directed by the doctor
- 0.2 mg: This medication is to be consumed as advised by the doctor, usually four times a day
Note
Avoid taking antacids that contain magnesium while treating with this medication because they may make the diarrhea it causes worse.
