Active Ingredient

Losartan Potassium is the main active ingredient in the medication. This active component is a member of a group of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It is a non-peptide angiotensin II receptor antagonist that shows antihypertensive activity. This active component binds to the angiotensin II receptor and blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the receptor. It is to promote vasodilatation and counteract the effects of aldosterone. This medication stimulates the adrenal cortex to synthesize and secrete aldosterone.

Indications

This medication belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists also called ARB blockers. This drug prevents blood vessels from narrowing lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. Cozaar treats high blood pressure in adults and children above 6 years old. This drug is also indicated to lower the risk of stroke in certain people with heart disease. It is also used to slow long-term kidney damage in people with type 2 diabetes with hypertension.

Action Mechanism

Angiotensin factor produced in the blood by the action of the angiotensin-converting enzyme is a chemical that attaches to angiotensin receptors found in many tissues. It is primarily on smooth muscle cells of blood vessels. This factor attachment to the receptors induces the muscle cells to contract and the blood vessels to narrow. This leads to an increase in blood pressure. Cozaar blocks the angiotensin receptor that relaxes muscle cells and dilates blood vessels to reduce blood pressure.

Dosages

This medication is available for oral consumption in dosages as given below:

• 25 mg: This drug should be consumed once a day with or without food as prescribed by the doctor
• 50 mg: It is to be consumed once a day before or after a meal as exactly mentioned in the prescription by the doctor
• 100 mg: Take this tablet once a day as advised by the doctor, do not go against it

It is advisable to get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position to reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness after consuming this drug.
