It is used to treat chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
Indications
Balsalazide Disodium composed medicine Colazal is used to treat a certain bowel disease or ulcerative colitis. It helps to reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain. It belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates. It decreases swelling in the colon.
Action Mechanism
It is believed to be by reducing inflammation in the colon. Ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory diseases cause excessive production of chemicals; Prostaglandins are produced by the enzymes, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. These enzymes are over-active in individuals with ulcerative colitis. Colazal may work by blocking the activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, to reduce the production of prostaglandins.
