Active Ingredient: This medicine is composed of Atorvastatin, which is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. Atorvastatin competitively inhibits hepatic hydroxymethyl-glutaryl. This is an enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a key step in cholesterol synthesis. It also increases the number of LDL receptors on hepatic cell surfaces to enhance uptake and catabolism of LDL and reduces LDL production and the number of LDL particles.
Indications: Atorvastatin composed medicine is used along with a proper diet to help lower “bad” cholesterol and fats and raise “good” cholesterol in the blood. Lipitor belongs to a group of drugs known as “statins.” It reduces the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides and raising “good” cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.
Action Mechanism: This medicine lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood. Lipitor prevents the production of cholesterol in the liver by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that makes cholesterol. It reduces total cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol in blood. LDL cholesterol is believed to be the “bad” cholesterol that is primarily responsible for the development of coronary artery disease. Reducing LDL cholesterol levels retards progression and may even reverse coronary artery disease. It raises the concentrations of HDL cholesterol that protects against coronary artery disease and reduces the concentration of triglycerides in the blood.
