Action Mechanism
This particular medicine Glucotrol XL is a member of drugs known as sulfonylurea. Insulin is a hormone formed in the pancreas that releases into the blood that removes sugar from the blood. It also reduces the formation of glucose by the liver. The glucose levels are high in people with type 2 diabetes because the cells in their bodies are resistant to the glucose-removing effect of insulin. The pancreas is unable to form insulin, which is necessary to overcome the resistance. It reduces blood glucose by stimulating the pancreas to form more insulin.
Dosages
It is available as an extended-release tablet for oral consumption in dosages as follows:
- 5 mg: This tablet should be taken 30 minutes before breakfast or as advised by the doctor, usually once a day.
- 10 mg: It is to be consumed 30 minutes before the first meal of a day as prescribed by the doctor.
Note
Due to extremely low or high blood sugar, it may cause blurred vision. Be careful while performing a task that requires alertness or clear vision.
