Description
Active Ingredient
Rifaximin is a non-systemic antibiotic derived from rifamycin SV with antibacterial activity. This antibiotic binds to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis and bacterial cell growth. This drug is not well absorbed, its antibacterial activity is largely localized to the gastrointestinal tract. This medication is a nonabsorbable antibiotic that is indicated as treatment and prevention of travelers’ diarrhea. It is used for the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy in people with advanced liver disease and to treat diarrhea in people with irritable bowel syndrome.
Indications
This mentioned medication is approved for the treatment of diarrhea induced by the common bacteria known as E. coli also called traveler’s diarrhea. Xifaxan is not recommended to treat fever or bloody diarrhea. It is an antibiotic that only treats bacterial infections. It is not effective for the treatment of the common cold, or flu.
It is also indicated to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea. It prevents a brain problem caused by liver disease that helps to think more clearly.
Action Mechanism
This medicine is active against Escherichia coli bacterial strains that induce traveler’s diarrhea. Xifaxan acts by preventing the growth of the bacteria by preventing them from manufacturing proteins responsible for their replication and survival. This suppresses the growth of the bacteria, and this drug reduces symptoms of traveler’s diarrhea. Hepatic encephalopathy is a serious neurologic complication of liver disease that affects the brain. It prevents and treats hepatic encephalopathy by decreasing the intestinal bacteria that produce ammonia.
