This active ingredient is the sodium salt of alendronate, a second-generation bisphosphonate and synthetic analog of pyrophosphate. It shows bone anti-resorption activity. This is an enzyme involved in terpenoid biosynthesis. Due to inhibition of this enzyme, it prevents the biosynthesis of isoprenoid lipids that are donor substrates of farnesylation and geranylgeranylation. This results in inhibited and bone resorption and turnover is reduced.
Indications: This is a nonhormonal medication used for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women.
