The active component of this medicine is a Sumatriptan Succinate. This component is a member of the triptan class of compounds that has anti-migraine property. It binds to and activates serotonin 5-HT1 receptors. This leads to constriction of meningeal, dural, cerebral or pial blood vessels through stimulation of the 5-HT1B receptors. It is for reducing the vascular pulsation and may provide relief in migraine headaches. This agonistic action of this agent through presynaptic stimulation of 5-HT1D and/or 5-HT1F receptors prevents the release of vasoactive and pro-inflammatory neuropeptide to relieve migraine headaches.
Sumatriptan composed medicine is indicated for the treatment of migraines. This drug helps to relieve headache, pain, and other migraine symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light/sound. Imitrex decreases the need for other pain medications. It is a triptan drug that affects a certain natural substance that causes the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. It relieves pain by affecting certain nerves in the brain.
Given medication belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin-1 receptor agonists. A migraine induces the blood vessels in the brain to expand. It causes a release of chemicals in the brain that can cause inflammation. Imitrex works by helping to bring blood vessels back to their normal size. It prevents release of these chemicals in the body that cause inflammation.
