Description
Active Ingredient: This medication has Nimodipine as the main active component. This medication is a dihydropyridine derivative and an analog of the calcium channel blocker. It has antihypertensive activity. This active component inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions in response to depolarization in smooth muscle cells. It is to inhibit the vascular smooth muscle contraction and inducing vasodilatation. It has a greater effect on cerebral arteries over peripheral smooth muscle cells and myocardial cells. It inhibits the drug efflux pump P-glycoprotein that overexpressed in some multi-drug resistant tumors, and improves the efficacy of some antineoplastic agents.
Indications: Nimodipine composed medication is approved to decrease problems due to a certain type of bleeding in the brain like subarachnoid hemorrhage-SAH. This medication is called a calcium channel blocker. The body responds to bleeding by narrowing the blood vessel to slow blood flow naturally. However, when the bleeding is in the brain, restricting blood flow induces more brain damage. Nimotop relaxes the narrowed blood vessels in the brain near the area of bleeding so blood can flow more easily. This process decreases the brain damage. This drug may also be used to decrease problems due to stroke.
