Description
Active Ingredient: Mefloquine Hydrochloride is an active component of this medication that shows antimalarial activity. This medicine acts as a blood schizonticide and exerts its actions by interacting with the phospholipid bilayer to interfere with the stability of the cell membrane. It also causes cell lysis. This active component is active against Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.
Indications: Given medication is indicated to treat malaria, a disease induced by parasites. Lariam effectively works by interfering with the growth of parasites in the red blood cells present in the human body. These parasites cause malaria by entering the body through the bite of a mosquito. This medication can also be used to prevent malaria.
Action Mechanism: This medicine shows its action mechanism by interfering with the growth of parasites in the red blood cells of the human body. Lariam is active against the erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium species. It does not act against the exoerythrocytic stages of the parasite. It is an effective drug against malaria parasites resistant to chloroquine.
Dosages: This medicine is available for oral consumption in a dosage as given below:
- 250 mg: It must be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take the medication on an empty stomach.
Note: This drug should not be taken to prevent malaria if you have a recent history of depression, an anxiety disorder, seizures, mental illness, or psychosis.
