Active Ingredient: The main active component of this medication is Finasteride, which is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound. It binds to and inhibits steroid type II 5-alpha-reductase in the prostate gland, liver, and skin, so as to interfere with the enzymatic conversion of testosterone to 5-dihydrotestosterone and reducing serum DHT levels. The decrease in serum DHT levels results in diminished stimulation of androgen receptors in the nuclei of prostate cells and, so, diminished prostate cell proliferation.
Indications: This given medicine is used to shrink an enlarged prostate i.e. benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH in adult men. Proscar might be used alone or taken in combination with other medications to reduce symptoms of BPH and may also reduce the need for surgery
It may improve symptoms of BPH and provide benefits such as the lowered urge to urinate, better urine flow with less straining, less of a feeling that the bladder is not completely emptied, and decreased nighttime urination. This medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT) that causes the growth of the prostate. This medication is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
Action Mechanism: This BPH treating medicine works by blocking the conversion of the hormone testosterone to the more potent hormone dihydrotestosterone. Proscar does this by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Dihydrotestosterone is partly responsible for making the prostate enlarge.
Dosages: This effective medicine is available for oral consumption and in dosage as mentioned below:
- 5 mg: This tablet shall be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor
Note: Women and children should not use this medication.
