Manufacturer: Wyeth Pharmaceuticals

Active Ingredient: Sirolimus is a natural macrocyclic lactone formed by the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It shows immunosuppressant properties. This active medication binds to the immunophilin FK Binding Protein-12 to generate an immunosuppressive complex that binds to and inhibits the activation of the mammalian Target Of Rapamycin. It leads to an inhibition of T lymphocyte activation and proliferation that occurs in response to antigenic and cytokine stimulation and inhibition of antibody formation.

Indications: Sirolimus composed medicine is approved to prevent rejection of a kidney transplant. Rapamune belongs to a class of drugs called immunosuppressants. This medicine works by weakening the defense system of the body to help the body accept the new organ as if it were it's own. It may also be used to treat certain lung diseases.

Action Mechanism: The active substance sirolimus is an immunosuppressant, a medicine that reduces the activity of the immune system. In the body, Rapamune attaches to a protein inside cells to make a complex. It later blocks another protein called mammalian target of rapamycin. Since mTOR is involved in the multiplication of activated T-lymphocytes. This drug decreases the number of these cells, reducing the risk of organ rejection. Due to blocking mTOR, it decreases the multiplication of these cells.

Dosages: This immunosuppressant medicine is available in a dosage as mentioned below:

  • 1 mg: It is to be consumed orally once a day as directed by the doctor
