It is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in children and adults who have used other arthritis medicines that did not work or have stopped working. Active Ingredient: The main active component of this medicine is Sulfasalazine. It is a synthetic salicylic acid derivative with affinity for connective tissues containing elastin and formulated as a prodrug, anti-inflammatory. It acts locally in the intestine through its active metabolites, sulfamide 5-aminosalicylic acid and salicylic acid, by a mechanism that is not clear. It appears inhibit cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin production and is used in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases.
Indications: Sulfasalazine composed medicine is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. It does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, Azulfidine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. It reduces irritation and swelling in the large intestines. It also reduces joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Action Mechanism: The given medicine supposed to work for the inhibition of prostaglandins, resulting in local anti-inflammatory effects in the colon. Azulfidine is broken down by intestinal bacteria into sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid. That which is absorbed is excreted by the kidneys and in the bile.
