An active ingredient in the medicine is Capecitabine a pyrimidine analog used as an antineoplastic agent to treat metastatic and advanced forms of breast and colon cancer. The ingredient is a carbamate ester that is cytidine which plays the role of a prodrug and an antimetabolite. It is a carbamate ester, a member of cytidines, and an organofluorine compound.
Indications
This medicine is approved for the treatment of people with Dukes’ C colon cancer who have undergone complete resection of the primary tumor. Xeloda is also indicated for people with metastatic breast cancer after failure of prior anthracycline-containing chemotherapy.
Action Mechanism
The active component of this ingredient, Capecitabine is a type of chemotherapy called an anti-metabolite. The body changes the ingredient into a common chemotherapy drug called fluorouracil. It restricts cells from producing and repairing DNA. The cancer cells need to form and repair DNA so they can grow and multiply. The medication is a member of drugs antimetabolites. These medications are very similar to normal substances within the cell. This medicine attacks cells at very specific phases in the cycle to stop their growth.
Dosages
This chemotherapy drug Xeloda is available in dosages as mentioned below:
- 150 mg: It should be taken after food within 30 minutes of a meal with water, not against the prescription by the doctor
- 500 mg: It is recommended to take this pill in a divided dose of 12 hours apart, exactly as prescribed by the doctor
Note
Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours after administrating this medicine.
