Active Ingredient: Mercaptopurine is an active component that has antineoplastic and immunosuppressive activities. This medication is made through the metabolism of mercaptopurine by hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase, mercaptopurine metabolites 6-thioguanine-5'-phosphate, and 6-this inosine monophosphate. This inhibits the nucleotide interconversions and de novo purine synthesis to block the formation of purine nucleotides and inhibiting DNA synthesis. Additionally, this active component is converted to 6-methylmercaptopurine ribonucleotide by 6-thiopurine methyltransferase and MMPRs are also potent inhibitors of de novo purine synthesis.
