Active Ingredient

The main active component of this medication is Finasteride, which is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound. It binds to and inhibits steroid type II 5-alpha-reductase in the prostate gland, liver, and skin, so as to interfere with the enzymatic conversion of testosterone to 5-dihydrotestosterone and reducing serum DHT levels. The decrease in serum DHT levels results in diminished stimulation of androgen receptors in the nuclei of prostate cells and, so, diminished prostate cell proliferation.

Indications

This given medicine is used to shrink an enlarged prostate i.e. benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH in adult men. Proscar might be used alone or taken in combination with other medications to reduce symptoms of BPH and may also reduce the need for surgery It may improve symptoms of BPH and provide benefits such as the lowered urge to urinate, better urine flow with less straining, less of a feeling that the bladder is not completely emptied, and decreased nighttime urination. This medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT) that causes the growth of the prostate. This medication is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.

Action Mechanism
